GOING SOLO
What is Solo?
Solo is a pivotal part of the 23 Journey at St Alban’s College, where participants spend 36 hours alone in nature, away from their peers. This period of solitude allows them to reflect on their experiences, deepen their faith, and reconnect with themselves. During Solo, participants write letters to themselves and the Headmaster, which are reread the following year. These letters capture their reflections, affirmations, and promises, fostering deeper self-awareness and emotional connections.
Why is Solo Important?
The Solo experience is transformative, offering growth on multiple levels:
Spiritual Reflection: A chance to step away from life’s noise and focus on one’s spiritual journey.
Personal Encounter: The wilderness solitude brings inner peace and a closer connection to God.
Emotional Renewal: Time alone in nature can be healing, helping participants recharge mentally and emotionally.
Building Resilience: Facing solitude strengthens self-reliance, confidence, and resilience.
Father Andrew’s Legacy
When the Journey began in 2004, Father Andrew, the first chaplain at St Alban’s, was instrumental in establishing Solo as a core experience. With 19 years of dedication to students’ spiritual growth, he led the inaugural Solo and introduced the Eucharist in the bush as a meaningful conclusion. This tradition continues, offering a powerful moment of reflection and spiritual connection at the end of Solo. Father Andrew’s influence lives on, inspiring new generations on their journey each year.
