On Friday, the Aviation Club had the privilege of hosting Duncan Gillespie, a retired pilot and founder of the Fly Africa Facebook group, for an online session. He joined the discussion live from the Stellenbosch Flying Club, standing in front of an ex-SAAF Bosbok aircraft.
Known for his outspoken views and deep knowledge of both the commercial and military aviation sectors in South Africa, Duncan offered fascinating insights into the future of flying. He reassured the boys that they could still dream of becoming pilots, though they may be among the last generation of manual aviators before automation takes over.
Despite recent aviation incidents, he emphasised that flying is safer than ever, as each accident leads to improved regulations and procedures that enhance public safety.
Duncan also shared valuable advice on career paths in aviation, highlighting that piloting is just one of many exciting opportunities in the industry.
