“LET’S DO THIS!” – TOM HAMILTON PART 2

“LET’S DO THIS!”

Taking the First Steps

The concept of a Journey had been circulating at St Alban’s for some time, but it was during a winter sports day in 2004 that it began to take shape. At a 1st Team hockey game, the then Deputy Headmaster Shane Kidwell met with |Old Albanian David Goodwin, who had recently returned to Johannesburg. Shane seized the opportunity and asked David if he’d consider organising a St Alban’s Journey. David accepted on the spot. Later, Shane approached the then-Headmaster Tom Hamilton with the idea as he crossed the field towards the post-match cocktails. Tom’s bold three-word response, “Let’s do this!” set in motion what would become the school’s most important annual event.

David Goodwin, an Old Albanian and former Head of Knoll House, was then entrusted with creating and implementing The first Journey route, transforming ideas and aspirations into a concrete plan. With teaching experience at Somerset College and leadership of groups on the Somerset Trek, David was well-suited for the task.
